Interview
Allan Reyes
What are some things you do to help yourself into the state of mind necessary for creative work?
Do something creative in other medium. I love to draw, paint and photography. I read books and magazine, cook food with my wife or even play blocks with my daughter. These things help me more creative and productive.
Do you follow a strict daily (or weekly, etc.) routine with regard to workflow, or is every day (or week) different?
Everyday is different but I have a weekly goal. I have different work schedule everyday.
Do you prefer to work in a closed, private environment free from other people and distractions, or in a more open, collaborative environment?
I prefer to do the actual design execution in a private environment but the preliminary stage in an open and collaborative environment
What do you do to get your day(s) started in the right direction?
I strive to start my day with a positive attitude and actions. It feels really good to be with the family at breakfast and it gets me going for the day's work.
What task management technique do you use?
I write a to-do list for the week in my notebook (both macbook and paper).
What things tend to disrupt your workflow?
A lot of things that are usual for a freelancer (e.g. errands, unanticipated visits, IM's, etc.). These simple things though can be managed can take away the momentum when you are already in the zone of producing and completing a task or project.
What previous experiences have influenced your workflow?
I have been working in an agency / corporate environment for 6 years and I have learned the useful methodologies it has to offer. I then fused it with the more independent but lesser creative constraint environment of a freelancer.
What other disciplines influence the way you work?
Is there anyone in particular you have learned from?
I am inspired by my father's great ability to produce drawings. I have not received any formal lessons from him but he taught me creativity and improvisation. I am practically self-taught both in the traditional arts (painting and drawing) and new media (print and web design).
What things help keep you focused on the work at hand?
The process of creating itself is truly a rewarding experience and this is one motivation to focus on the work. Production goals or milestones are very important. Setting a goal is a thing and attaining it is another thing. Breaking down the ultimate goal into smaller goals that are easier and faster to accomplish can help one to focus without even knowing it!
